RV-Pro.com – RV Travel Still Offers Inexpensive Vacations

// May 12th, 2011 // By: Terry Vaughn // No Comments » // Features

Given that gasoline pump prices have climbed over a buck higher per gallon since this time last year, when I left Houston for a trip last month with a travel trailer I had expectations of a much more expensive vacation.

My wife, Janis, and I planned to spend about $1,000 – or about twice as much for a trip which would take us some 1,500 miles on a huge loop from Houston into the canyon’s region of Texas’ high plains where we hoped to witness a full moon’s rise and a meteor shower in pristine, wilderness settings.

RV Vacations are Least Expensive, Study Shows

RESTON, Va. — Despite fuel prices, typical RV trips remain the least expensive type of vacation, according to a recent study comparing vacation costs.

PKF Consulting, an international consulting firm with expertise in travel and tourism, found that “typical RV family vacations are on average 27 to 61 percent less expensive than other types of vacations studied.” Even factoring in RV ownership and fuel costs, the study reveals that RV family vacations tend to be significantly less expensive than other types of vacations.

“This study re-affirms what RVers have long known, that RV vacations deliver greater economic value compared to other types of vacations,” says Richard Coon, president of the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA). “RV vacations continue to be the most affordable way for a family to travel because of the tremendous savings on air, hotel and restaurant costs. And these savings offset the cost of fuel.”
PKF analyzed major costs that would be incurred by a family of four taking eight different types of vacations for three, seven, 10 or 14 days to such popular travel destinations as the Grand Canyon, Cape Cod, and Napa, Calif. (more…)

ELKHART, Ind. – The new LW3000 Plus portable digital inverter/gasoline generator from Dometic is the solution for a reliable power supply at home, work or on the road. This model is more lightweight and efficient than other models and can run up to 10 hours, depending on the load.

“Our new inverter/generator is 24 percent lighter than other models, and the Smart Throttle system automatically adjusts the engine to run at the right RPM required to power the load, so it’s more energy-efficient,” explained Brad Sargent, vice president of sales and marketing. “Plus you won’t disturb your family and neighbors because the air-cooled four-stroke engine is quieter.” (more…)

RESTON, Va. — Shipments of recreation vehicles from manufacturers to dealers posted a 116 percent increase in January, compared to January 2009, the RV Industry Association announced today.

“Wholesale shipments to retailers of all RVs were reported at 15,800 units in the January 2010 survey of manufacturers, more than twice the total from this same month last year,” said Bill Baker, senior director of communications for RVIA. “Both towable and motorhome categories participated in this month’s growth with all categories at the same or substantially above their January totals last year.

“Importantly, this marked the sixth consecutive monthly improvement for RV shipments as dealer orders more closely reflected retail sales during the month,” said Baker. (more…)
